Hunting in Ubud
The last post contained some para-philosophical thoughts, therefore let us focus more on reality this time.... Right after the ritual of the day ๐. Here in Bali spirituality plays a big role. Everyday people are leaving small offerings at corners, on doorsteps on cars and so on. At special places incenses are being burned and there are a lot of special occasions with social rituals like the full moon.๐
Even touristic places like waterfalls are still held sacred. Little shrines in the middle of touristic masses are common on Bali. A lot of natural scenes like waterfalls, rice fields and jungle trails are crammed between the hustling and bustling of the city in a relatively small area around Ubud. Two remarkable observations about that:
- Even though a lot of attractive spots are packed in a small area, it takes a lot of time to visit them all. The reason for this is of course the shear number of site but also the traffic. Like a slow heartbeat it pumps gas smelling air and countless people on scooters and in air-conditioned cars through the clogged veins of Ubud. Pilgrimages of tourist are the seasonal rituals around the most instagramable locations leading to daily infarcts on the main streets.
- The other interesting thing about Ubud is, that a surprise lies around any corner. You can stumble over the dirty broken sidewalks coughing exhaust fumes just to find yourself in a calm green oasis with cool fresh air. Just take a moment, relax and enjoy.
Be aware that this variety comes with a catch. Everything in Bali is changing really fast. This day you visit a big organic farmers market packed with fresh fruit and vegetables the next time it is only a barren parking lot for the all present taxis.
Like on the last visit two years ago our days here revolve around food. Even more so, since some family members arrived to accompany us. Between the meals we pursue to explore the city paced by the slow pulsing traffic, always stalking the next good shot. I personally like to hunt for pictures of animals. Thus I felt like heaven in butterfly garden. In the end taking pictures and developing them is my daily ritual here in Bali.๐คญ
